Still Waiting for Wave Four

Bob Herbert's "Politics and Misogyny" succeeds on all levels. Its absolute accuracy is utterly disturbing.

Where are the 18 year old activists? This feminist is tired! I am so ready for the next wave in the gender revolution. Kids! Get busy.

It makes this Feminist sad & tired, too. The next generation is too busy binging and purging and idolizing a bevy of Bratz like Paris Hilton and Hannah Montana (who isn't altogether evil, but perpetrates the stereotype that the only GOOD girl role model is one that is pretty and wins American Idol as a rock star). They take their reproductive rights for granted to the point of saying they're "Pro-Life," even as their rights are eroding. They set themselves up for exploitation and humiliation--not coincidentally the largest audience for "The Girls Next Door" is middle school girls. Sigh. I almost want them to lose their rights so they have to earn them back and appreciate how far and how long we fought for their rights.

Melissa - you're absolutely right, of course. I think of women I know who have had abortions but yet voted for George Bush. How can this be? People can't see that politics and ideology play out on real bodies, in real life because we are very distracted by our toys and the fakes lives (and stuff) that we enjoy so much.

I really do think it's because our history has been forgotten--that the young don't realize how much we gained and how much we are slowly losing. I keep thinking of Mad-Eye Moody from the Harry Potter books--"Constant vigilance!" The patriarchy is too strong for us to ease up on our efforts. We can't take anything for granted.
