Grits, Bologna, Spam

You intrepid defenders of Jell-O! All the waxing nostalgic and mouth-watering over the low-brow food of days-gone-by brought to mind the low-end culinary proclivities of my youth.

  • Wonder bread with Oscar Meyer Summer Sausage and Miracle Whip, flattened (Cheri aptly observes this might now be called panini--maybe then it's chic!)
  • Nacho Cheese Doritos sprinkled into said sandwich
  • Brown-sugar Pop Tarts, toasted with melted butter on top
  • Snickers bars topped in Cool Whip
  • Spam Loaf
  • Cheeze Whiz on Hot Dogs
  • Cheetos wrapped in bacon
I'm sure there's more but, all appearances aside, I have a job that I probably should pay some attention to.

How about the low-brow delectables from your childhood?

Peanut butter and banana sandwiches - both a childhood and an adult favourite!

I don't know if this counts, but I used to love spreading butter on Saltines.

Also, the cream of mushroom soup poured over chicken breasts? Yeah... I just made that last night for my son. It's his favorite. But now I cut the chicken up into small pieces and stir-fry it... then add the soup. Very high-brow, no?

Beth: But that snack has way too much class, my dear! It is also one of my adult favorites and if you tire of that, try an apple dipped in peanut butter.

Deviled ham on toast, for one. And. . . toasted english muffin sandwiches of Spam, Velveeta, and canned pineapple.

And Tracy? Try scraping oyster crackers across a stick of butter. Mmmm. Salty!

Bacon sandwiches.

Just extra-crispy bacon, Miracle Whip, and bread.

Amen.

Ah, food nostalgia...

I grew up a bit differently with a French mother who didn't quite get American cuisine...

So in the school lunchroom, circa late 60s, when all the other kids had their Orange Tang, NASA space sticks, Hunt's Snack Pack (then with the easy lift off top that could slice through a child's hand), and PB&J with grape jelly showing through translucent Wonder Bread, Mamon served us delicacies such as:

- Liverwurst sandwich
- Cream cheese & brown sugar sandwich
[both on whole wheat, NOT Wonder]
- Cold ratatouille

Okay, maybe that last one's more "haute cuisine". But at nine years old, it was definitely not cool.

In the long run, I can't say it's left scars. But I do let my children pack their own lunches -- just in case.

Instant mashed potatoes on white wonder bread smeared with butter. Can anyone say fat & starch?

Philip: I want your lunch! Cream cheese and brown sugar? Crack for kids.

Yum yum and yum. I used to eat vanilla ice cream with powdered Nestle Quick and maple syrup on top.

My mom makes this thing called egg in a cup that's basically an undercooked egg mixed with chunks of buttered toast. There's something very low-brow about undercooked foodstuffs served in plastic mugs that is both conforting and nauseating.

Back when Catholics couldn't eat meat on Fridays, my mom often made "breakfast for supper." My favorite (probably not too strange) was the left-over boiled potatoes that she sliced and fried with the scrambled eggs -umm!

Oscar Mayer bologna on Wonder Bread with butter. LOVED IT! I even craved it when pregnant (though honestly, did not indulge, which was probably a wise decision).

Red kool-aid.

Twinkies. Loved me some Twinkies.
