What?

Matron's friend, upon a chance meeting at the grocery store: "Hey, it's great to see you! What are you up to these days?"

Matron: "What the blog says."

Friend: "I don't read your blog. I don't believe in blogging."

Matron (little pause): "Is that sort of like not 'believing in' being gay? Like these things exist -- blogging and sexual preference. There's no refuting. How can you not believe in something that exists?"

Friend: "Well, I guess I refuse to read your blog because it's completely self-serving."

Matron: "That's entirely the point!"

Friend: "But I want a conversation and exchange, not just to read about you."

Matron: "That's what 'comments' are for. Plus, I have three children. I don't need more human interaction."

Friend: "I can't even fully explain it, but I don't believe in blogs. It's not personal, I don't like the medium."

Matron: "Can I send you postcards?"

Friend: "That would be fine."

Guess who wrote a post card tonight, for the first time in 15 years.

Ohh.. That would be a GREAT blog-feature, being able to subscribe via postcard instead of having to use an RSS-reader.

I got almost the exact same reaction from a good friend I mentioned my blog to. "Oh, BLOGS!" she said with a super-dismissive wave of her hand, "I can't believe you're actually into that."

Same problem here - people ask me what's new, but how hard is it to click to one website and find out each day what is going on (in an entertaining fashion, if I say so myself) with my family? It's not as if I'm asking them to develop a 200-blog blog list, you know. Just mine.

What is postage for a postcard up to now? Blogging is free!

Some of us just need to put up an occasional snipit or comment that we like to share - Facebook is enough; but we do like interactions and talking with and hearing stories from interesting, caring friends, like you. But in your blog, you're "the Matron" - just not quite the same. xo

A postcard update! No way!
Well, I can agree with her a little, I don't believe in Facebook. I know it exists, but I don't "believe in it."

Hmmm... who has to pay the postage for the postcard?

I side with Green Girl too: I'll blog but not Facebook. Or Twitter. I try to keep my life as simple as possible!

Whoa, there was something a little frenemy-ish about that friend!

But how nice of you to meet her epistolary needs the old fashioned way!

A postcard with my URL; now there's an idea. I knew there was a great reason I always read the comments!

I just put a regular stamp on it! I should have inquired : -)

I will have to admit. I'm a bit insulted by the friends who won't read my blog. I'm not that interesting, I realize, but come on! 5 minutes once a week isn't that much to ask.

I get it, Erin! I do feel the same!

Oh my goodness! I love that you thought, postcard! I would have thought of it 4 hours after the fact, in which time it would have been mute.

I have to admit though, I would just as soon not have some of the people in my everyday life not read my blog. I write for me not for them and sometimes I vent, if they read it and then I have to rehash a vent it's all dramatic....I dunno, I don't keep it off limits to the "reals" in my life but I don't always promote it. But I do, with absolute certainty believe in blogging :)

My husband doesn't read my blog. When someone asked him why he doesn't, he replied "Because I live it." Fortunately he believes in being gay, so I won't have to hide his body in the attic when friends come over.

I think people who don't read blogs do it as part of their political stance, as a way of demonstrating their True Gravitas and Lack of Interest In Silliness. Which is completely counter productive in my case, because my blog often contains the best bits of my mind.

Those that blog but won't facebook strikes me metaphorically like someone who would broadcast but would not get on the CB (remember CB radio ?). Even with 'comments' - it is fun to be on the soapbox. I do know that the Matron facebooks from time to time. I sure as heck am not going to follow more than a few blogs. Just don't have the time. Just like bloggers don't have time for FB? All I can say, is I pale at the thought of the consistency and time involvement of putting out a regular blog. So I guess I stick with what suits! -The Other Mary's Tom.

I like to be the elitist blogger. So in Jenn's case where her friend said, "Oh BLOGS!" I say the same about FB, Twitter, etc. I pretend Blogs are on a much loftier scale.
