More on My Success, So Far

Just found out that my brother and his wife have purchased a 2008 Volvo for my mother.

Well.

In November, John and I cleaned out the gutters on her roof.

So there.

  1. Mary,

I've come here from HBM. I've enjoyed your writing, ideas, and varied musings on family life.

    Thank you.

  2. Lol. I think the cleaning the gutters is every bit as extravagant as a new car.

  4. A Volvo? Way to make the rest of the family look like losers.

I get this. We are the poor folk of our family. Cleaning gutters is nice.

  5. Cleaning the gutters is SO nice. And I bet your mom knows that, and that's all you need :-)

  7. Pretty funny -- caveman570 is actually my son's account! I thought the matron was thanking her supportive readership. Thank you!

  8. Ah, sibling rivalry.
For what it's worth, I think cleaning the gutters takes more effort!

  9. Anyone can throw money around--cleaning the gutters is a labor of love!

  10. Too funny. As someone who lives local to her in-laws while the "other brother with the kids" lives on the other side of the world, what I appreciate most about this post is one sibling doing the "fun" stuff and the other doing the "dirty" stuff.

  11. It's all equal in her eyes I bet. We live out of state and have done well so we bought my MIL a car (for the record, not a volvo, but a decent used Chevy). In my eyes, that hardly compensates for all the things the in-town children do for her--snow shoveling, emergency furnace repairs, gutter cleaning, and so forth. But then the others aren't in the same position to help her out with a car. Bottom line: lucky her for having all of you in your own ways helping her out.

  12. What, they couldn't pay for the gutter cleaning, too? I am the "doer," and my brother is the "buyer," though it's not competitive. I just tell my mother when she gets going about my brother that she can have him buy her a daughter who gives a hoot.

  13. Why didn't they just build her a new house when the gutters needed cleaning? Stopping at a new Volvo seems so, well, cheap.

  14. Yes, but when the Volvo needs repairs just think of all the calls your brother will get! You win!
